Emergency Drugs

Objectives

  • Discuss access for administration of advanced life support medications and fluid.
  • Outline the indications, actions, dose, route of administration and adverse effects of the primary resuscitation drugs, including Adrenaline, Antiarrhythmics, Atropine, Electrolytes and Sodium Bicarbonate.
  • Discuss fluid resuscitation during cardiac arrest.

To date no drugs have been proven to increase long term survival post cardiac arrest.  The priorities for all resuscitation attempts remain effective chest compressions with ventilation and oxygenation, and correcting the cause of the arrest.  Drug treatment is secondary to high quality CPR and other interventions.
